Recount Text: My Experience Doing the Saint Mary’s Way Activity
Orientation
Last week, my friends and I participated in the Saint Mary’s Way activity. Our class was assigned to do good deeds by visiting an orphanage and a nursing home. I was placed in the group that visited the nursing home. Before the visit, we prepared all the plans, items, and activities needed to make the event run smoothly.
Events
First, our team created a proposal for the nursing home. The proposal included the goals, activity details, and schedule. After it was approved, we held several meetings in class 9.3 to discuss the rundown, divide the tasks, choose the activities, and prepare the required items. Even though we had different opinions sometimes, these meetings helped us build strong teamwork.
After the planning was complete, we bought the items we needed, such as fruits, tissues, liquid soap, and other supplies. The total cost was 360,000 rupiah.
On the day of the visit, we planned to meet at the nursing home at 09.00. However, my friend and I arrived a bit late because of traffic. When we arrived, the sisters welcomed us warmly and explained the rules before entering the hall.
As we walked inside, the grandmothers greeted us kindly. We started the event with games and singing. One of the games we played was “nostalgia cards,” where the grandmothers shared memories when the music stopped. After the game, the grandmothers enjoyed the steamed buns we had prepared.
Then, we sang spiritual songs together and continued with a conversation session. I talked with a grandmother who turned out to be the daughter of a soldier who fought against colonizers. Her story amazed me.
After the conversation, we served the fruits we had prepared earlier and helped feed the grandmothers. Before leaving, we invited them to write messages for the younger generation on a board. Finally, we took photos as documentation and said our goodbyes.
Reorientation
This experience taught me valuable lessons. I learned about care, love, and humility from interacting with the grandmothers. I also realized that I should not judge others based on first impressions. Because of this activity, I want to improve my time management, be more caring, and join similar activities again to continue developing myself positively.
